10 Prom Tuxedo Tips for Guys

March 8, 2016 by StageScreen - No Comments

Looking great on prom night is essential. You want to look your best to impress your date, impress the cameras, and to create a night that you will remember forever. Countless hours of planning go into setting the stage for a memorable prom, and no single piece is as important as what you are going to wear.

For guys, that means picking out the perfect tuxedo. Few occasions call for something as formal as a tux, and there is a chance that this will be the first tux you have worn in your entire life. To get it just right, use the following 10 tips.

You Don’t Have to Go Crazy
In an effort to stand out from the crowd of guys in tuxes, many guys pick out the wildest combination of colors they can find. This is often a mistake. There is nothing wrong with a timeless selection, such as a black tie and vest. Sure, you might not turn heads, but you will look classy and cool.

Wear It Right
You don’t wear a tuxedo in the same way that you wear a pair of jeans or casual shorts. If you aren’t sure how your tux should be worn, ask for help at the rental shop before you leave.

matching tuxedo and dressMatch Your Date
It isn’t a requirement to wear the same colors as your date, but your attire should at least make sense together. For instance, if you are going to be wearing a tux, she should at least be wearing a nice, formal dress that will look like a logical fit with your attire.

Plan Ahead!
This is one of the biggest mistakes that guys make as they are getting ready for prom. Remember, you aren’t the only person with a prom to attend, as there are likely several schools in the area with prom on a similar date. Make tux arrangements as soon as possible to avoid problems at the last minute.

Pick Up the Tux On Time
This is another mistake that goes along with the previous point. If you fail to pick up your tux in a timely manner, there may not be time left before the event to get it altered, if necessary. Remember, the tux might not arrive at the store exactly right for you, so make sure there is time between pick up and the event in case adjustments are needed.

Take a Dress Color Swatch with You
If your date already has her dress – or she knows which dress she is going to wear – have her provide you with a swatch that you can take with you to the tux shop. This will help the salesperson at the tux store match up your colors properly.

Don’t Expect Perfection
It would be nice to have a custom suit that was created just for you – and that is possible, if you want to spend thousands of dollars. Otherwise, you are going to be dealing with a rented product, and there are likely to be a couple points that aren’t quite perfect. And that’s okay.

Keep It in Perspective
The point of going to your prom is to have fun and make memories. If you are too obsessed with every little detail of your attire, you are going to forget to make it fun. Relax, and be sure to enjoy yourself along the way.

Try It On
The tux shop is going to want you to try on your tux before you leave the store with it, and you should follow that advice. The last thing you want to do is get the tux out right before prom only to find that it doesn’t actually fit.

Take It Back
This should be an obvious point, but you need to remember to take your tux back to the rental shop after the event is over. Failing to do so in a timely manner could be an expensive mistake!
